CILS assists in board clean up
With the ever-growing demand for long-term traceability, Computer Imprintable Label Systems (CILS) has used its extensive application-based experience to allow manufacturers to track products through solder baths and cleaning.
While industry has been focused on the introduction of lead-free components, CILS has taken responsibility for ensuring the labels and ribbons fully comply with the directive. A significant benefit for manufacturers is that the labels withstand the chemicals used in the new cleaning processes, retaining the valuable data contained either in the barcode or serial numbers. The labels can withstand temperatures in excess of 400ºC, as well as the new cleaning systems developed to cater for lead-free solder.
Every process in the industry is unique, comments Simon Osborne, CILS Business Development Manager. Temperature, flux and cleaning regimes depend on the design, and no standard exists. CILS is in a position to make recommendations based on a combination of factors. A manufacturer who was experiencing a loss of label data during the cleaning phase approached CILS to solve the problem. We recommended a CILS label linked to an on-demand thermal transfer printer with the correct label and ribbon combination to ensure 100% integrity of the data and label.
CILS offers the widest range of durable labels to meet the demands of electronic production in preparation for the RoHS Directive in 2006. Labels can be supplied blank or pre-printed with variable data added on-demand with thermal transfer printers.
