Solvent resistant labels for Agilent Technologies

Background

Agilent Technologies is a global leader in laboratory consumables, supporting critical markets including food safety, environmental and forensic science, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, chemical and energy, and research. Their laboratory customers require durable labelling solutions that can withstand the harshest conditions without compromising data integrity.

Challenge

Agilent needed robust solvent-resistant slide labels for their laboratory slide labelling kits, sold worldwide. The labels had to survive prolonged exposure and complete submersion in aggressive solvents such as xylene, IMS, and IDA without:

– Smudging or fading of print
– Peeling or falling off glass slides
– Staining during histology and tissue staining processes

Previously, Agilent’s slide labels required an additional over-lamination process to achieve solvent resistance. This not only increased production costs but also delayed order fulfilment. A faster, more reliable labelling solution was needed.

Solution

Xylene Resistant Microscope Slide Labels Displayed by Xylene Bottle

CILS worked closely with Agilent Technologies to develop a custom solvent-resistant laboratory label that would remove the need for over-lamination while meeting all solvent durability requirements.

Our label specialists provided test samples designed to withstand 15 hours of xylene submersion. After extensive validation and feedback from Agilent, CILS manufactured a brand-new thermal transfer printable slide label with the following features:

– Ultra-solvent resistance when printed with a CILS RRD ribbon
– Clear, durable print that does not discolour during histopathology staining
– Adhesive engineered to prevent lifting or falling off, even after prolonged solvent exposure

Results

Once validated, the new xylene-resistant slide labels were integrated into Agilent’s laboratory slide labelling kits. This solution delivered measurable benefits:

– Time savings – eliminating the over-lamination step
– Cost reduction – lowering production expenses per kit
– Improved reliability – ensuring labels remain intact and legible in the harshest laboratory environments

By partnering with CILS, Agilent was able to enhance its laboratory slide kits with durable, solvent-resistant labels that protect critical sample data and improve efficiency for labs worldwide.
