Exploring Halogen Free Label Technology for Nuclear Applications

Background

As global markets embrace the power of cleaner energy sources, markets are increasingly looking towards nuclear energy as an efficient alternative to traditional fuel sources. However, this accelerating interest is coming under a justifiably heightened lens. As nuclear facilities face intensified scrutiny stemming from long-standing reputational challenges and persistent public apprehension, nuclear energy providers must ensure that their operations are as transparent, prudent and as closely monitored as feasibly possible.

LSZH compounds

Ever since the nuclear power industry began seriously adopting halogen-free cables, specifically Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) varieties in the late 1980s and early 1990s, halogen free materials have become the industry standard for a variety of different use cases.

LSZH compounds are engineered to minimise the release of harmful emissions when exposed to fire. Unlike traditional cable materials, they produce far fewer toxic and corrosive gases as they burn. The resulting smoke is lighter, less concentrated, and disperses more slowly, greatly improving visibility and air quality during an emergency, allowing faster evacuation procedures and safer firefighting efforts. While low smoke polymers and related materials also exist, halogen-free materials are extremely flame-retardant and produce clearer, whiter smoke.
